The topics of the prefatory materials are paginated differently from the original text. Changes have occurred in both indentation and font size. In addition, further corrections were made during the proofreading these are also included among the "Corrections." The errors in the first edition and listed under Supplement, "Corrections to the First Edition," have been corrected in this electronic text. Since the Web Site cannot efficiently reproduce the International Phonetic Alphabet, all phonetic transcriptions have been removed. The scanned text has been proofread and most of the defective text corrected. The material is derived from a scanned version of the 1982 text and, for the Supplement in 1990, the electronic file used to print the book.
